Special protected natural areas (SPNA)

Special protected natural areas (SPNA) are plots of land, water surface and air above them where natural complexes and objects of special natural, scientific, cultural, esthetic, recreational and therapeutic importance are located and which are exempted fully or partially from practical exploitation by resolutions of state authorities and which have a special regime of protection.

Special protected natural areas refer to the objects of National Estate. The SPNA status is nowadays determined by Federal Law “On special protected natural areas” accepted by the State Duma on February 15, 1995.

Moscow City Government activity in special protected natural areas of Moscow is coordinated by State budgetary institutions for environment protection in Moscow administrative districts which are subordinated to the Department.
